Sarah Hunt (39) shot and killed her son Garrett (17) while they were riding together to school

Police were called to a vehicle in Riesel, Texas just before 8am on Monday November 9, 2020.

They found Garrett Hunt (17) dead inside the vehicle. He had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Police found his mother Sarah Riesel walking along the side of the road and took her into custody. It is believed that Garrett was shot by Sarah while they were on the way to school.

Authorities confirmed the 17-year-old boy was found dead, but provided no further details.

Sarah is a fifth-grade science and social studies teacher at Lake Air Montessori Magnet School in Waco.

McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara said Sarah had no criminal history. He did not know for sure if the two were living in the same home.

“She’s been interviewed practically all day,” McNamara said. “We’re trying to get to the bottom of this.”

“It’s just a very sad, tragic situation. I don’t know how else to describe it,” McNamara said. “We’re going to be working overtime trying to sort this one out.”

An affidavit was released on November 10.

Riesel police and McLennan County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call just before 8 a.m. Monday of a stalled car on East Frederick Road, McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara said Monday. They found Garrett Hunt’s body in the front seat of the Hyundai minivan with multiple gunshot wounds, he said.

Police found a .40-caliber pistol in the car’s driver seat floor, along with a .40-caliber magazine and cartridges, some in the car and some on the ground, according to the affidavit.

According to the affidavit from McLennan County Sheriff’s Office, officers learned through interviews with family members that Sarah had picked Garrett up from a camper where he had been staying with his father and planned to drop him off at school.

Sarah Hunt approached two people near Riesel Square after the shooting, telling them her son needed help and was with her mother in heaven, according to the affidavit. She said “what have I done” and “this is not real,” according to witnesses quoted in the affidavit.

During questioning, she “would respond by sobbing, saying, ‘I didn’t mean to, I didn’t mean to,'” the affidavit states.

The Riesel community held a vigil for Garrett on November 12.

With candles in hand, hugs, and tears flowing, friends and family of Garrett Hunt honored him at the Riesel Lion’s Club. Those who knew him said he was sweet, kind and well mannered.

“More than that he was a Christian,” said Laura Uptmore, the owner of The Fillin Station Bar and Grill in West. “He and I talked. The little bit of time he was there with us we talked about church and that he needed to be off on Sundays so that he could attend church.”

  1. This article says, “You can see Sarah on the jail roster”, then it lists a jail roster for someone completely different. Sarah Hurst (in for drug possession) and Sarah Hunt are two different people.
