In January 2018, 19-year-old Caitlin Denison left Reno, Nevada, and travelled to West Texas with a man whose identity remains a mystery to the public. Within days, Caitlin would vanish without a trace. Her final known hours included visits to businesses around Midland and Odessa, and one chilling detail stands out above the rest: Caitlin contacted family and friends and told them she was afraid for her life. Then, the messages stopped, and nobody heard from her again.
For years, her family has been left searching for answers. Investigators have retraced the pair’s movements, appealed for information about a customised Ford F-250 and an RV, and even searched a stretch of vacant land in Texas. But Caitlin has never been found, and the man who travelled with her has not been publicly identified.
Caitlin Marie Denison was born on 8/7/1998.
Caitlin was from Reno, Nevada. Family members later described her as outgoing, bubbly, kind and funny. In an interview reported by the Midland Reporter-Telegram in November 2024, relative Emily Watson remembered her as someone who lit up a room and attracted people with her personality.
Emily also spoke about struggles that Caitlin went through including homelessness.
The Denison family went through another tragedy in January 2008. Caitlin’s cousin Briana Denison was abducted from a friend’s house in Reno, Nevada. Her body was discovered on February 15, 2008, in a field near a Reno business park after being raped and murdered. A man named James Michael Biela was convicted of the murder and sentenced to death.
Briana was 19 when she was murdered, and Caitlin was 19 when she disappeared.
In 2017, Caitlin was living in Reno, Nevada. That year, she met a man from Midland, Texas in Reno. Midland is around 1400 miles/2250km from Reno.
Authorities know who this man is, but his name has never been publicly released.
Six months later, on January 9, 2018, Caitlin flew with the man to Midland. Before she left, Caitlin did not divulge any details about the man’s identity to her family. They did not know his name or what he looked like.
It is known that the man likely worked as a truck driver in the Permian Basin oil industry at one point.
Authorities believe that after they arrived in Midland, Caitlin stayed in his RV which was parked in West Odessa, TX.
Investigators believe that on January 10, 2018, the RV moved to a location in Midland. This is around 30 miles/50km from West Odessa.
Later that same day, Caitlin contacted family and friends. She told them she was at the Walmart at 4517 North Midland Drive with the man. She also allegedly said “this guy makes me scared for my life.” She also allegedly said that the man had touched her inappropriately and that she had pulled a knife on him.
When police looked into the movements of Caitlin and the man, they discovered that they also visited a Domino’s Pizza on Linda Drive in Odessa that day.
They then went onto Rick’s Cabaret in Odessa, in an effort to find Caitlin a job.

Caitlin’s family have said that she did not have the required permit needed to work at the club.
She would likely have needed an entertainer’s permit issued by the City of Odessa if she intended to work as a dancer at Rick’s.
Under Odessa’s sexually oriented business regulations, entertainers must apply for a permit through the police department. The current rules generally require applicants to be at least 21 years old. Caitlin was only 19 at the time.
January 10 was the last day that Caitlin had contact with friends and family. After this, she seemingly vanished without a trace.
Caitlin’s family began searching for her. Authorities spoke to the man and he claimed that Caitlin had left his home quietly and alone and that he had nothing to do with her disappearance.
The official missing person description records her as approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and 120 pounds, with blonde hair and blue eyes. At the time she disappeared, she was wearing a fur vest over a black shirt, black leggings with braided detailing down the sides and furry boots.
In May 2022, NewsWest9 reported that a new detective was investigating Caitlin’s case. Local authorities continued appealing for information, and a reward was offered for information leading to her whereabouts.
Investigators have sought information about a pickup truck associated with the journey and an RV believed to have been used as accommodation. In 2024, an investigator working with Caitlin’s family told the Midland Reporter-Telegram that authorities wanted to trace the pickup’s movements in West Texas in January 2018.
The appeal was directed at people who might have encountered the vehicle while working in the oilfields or at the locations Caitlin and the man reportedly visited.
Texas DPS Sergeant Steven Blanco described it as a highly customised Ford F-250 pickup, with a lift kit and distinctive front bumpers. Investigators hoped people working in the Permian Basin oil industry or living in the area would recognise it.

“It’s a highly customized Ford F-250 pickup, it has a lift kit on it, front bumpers. It’s not your everyday vehicle that you see on the roads in the Permian Basin,” said Sergeant Steven Blanco with Texas DPS.

He also spoke about the man Caitlin was last known to be with.
“He had extensive contacts, still had friends and associates in this Permian Basin area that may know something, and investigators do believe they know something and so, we’re asking them to come forward and provide closure to the family in this case,” said Sgt Blanco.
In January 2025, Texas Rangers and other LE searched an approximately 10-acre area of vacant land in Midland County, near County Roads 1223 1/2 and 160.
The search was connected to Caitlin’s disappearance. Her family subsequently confirmed that investigators had told them she had not been found during the search. Authorities did not publicly disclose all the details behind the operation.
“This afternoon, we received an update from the Texas Rangers regarding our inquiry into the search of the vacant field in Midland.
We were informed that the Rangers had indeed been conducting a search related to Caitlin’s case, though, unfortunately, they did not locate her. While this outcome is heartbreaking, we remain steadfast in our commitment to finding Caitlin and bringing her home.
We are grateful that law enforcement continues to actively investigate her disappearance, and we appreciate the ongoing efforts of the Texas Rangers and all involved. However, it is disheartening that we were not notified in advance of this search, leaving us to learn about it from third-party sources. We believe that more transparent communication would have helped to support Caitlin’s family and all those working tirelessly to resolve this case. As we move forward, we remain hopeful that, together with law enforcement, we will uncover the answers we so desperately need and bring justice to Caitlin and her loved ones.“
The man she was with has been identified and is no longer in the Midland area. He worked as a truck driver for the oil industry in the Permian Basin area. He was questioned by the police in Nevada about Caitlin’s disappearance, but authorities haven’t said whether he’s a suspect.
According to Sergeant Steven Blanco, Caitlin Denison is just one of twenty thousand cold cases in Texas.
The Texas Rangers’ official cold-case listing continues to seek information about Caitlin’s disappearance and offers a reward of up to US$3,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the crime.
Caitlin would now be 28 years old. She is described as a white female. Blonde hair, blue eyes. Her nose is pierced on both sides, her ears are pierced three to four times each, and her lower lip, upper lip, and tongue are pierced. She has scars on her arms and legs from self-inflicted cuts, a tattoo of the Libra scales on her right forearm, an alien head and the letter M on one of her left fingers, and a symbol on one of her right fingers. Her hair had been bleached light blonde prior to her disappearance and was growing out, with light ends and darker roots.
