True Crime Society - The unexplained death of Katie Garcia

Today we’re looking at the death of 42-year-old Katie Garcia in Kansas City, Missouri.

Katie was found critically injured outside her home in the early hours of July 30, 2026. She was unconscious and had suffered a serious head injury.

She remained in hospital for almost a month before she died on August 29.

Police have not announced an arrest in connection with her death, and the circumstances remain under investigation.

There are a number of unanswered questions surrounding the case, including how Katie came to be outside her home, how she sustained her injuries and what happened during the hours before she was discovered.

So what do we know about Katie?

There is no online obituary yet so we have had to piece together information about her family.

Katie’s mother is Monica and her sister is Jennifer Trimble. On December 6, 2019, Katie married Billy Taylor.

We know that Katie was working as a massage therapist at the time of her death. Some reports also state that she was a nutritionist.

On the evening of Wednesday July 29, 2026, Katie worked and returned home at around 9.30pm.

She and Billy reportedly spent time together and went to bed at around 11pm. Billy has said everything seemed normal.

On Thursday July 30 at 12.11am, the home’s ADT security system logged the back door opening. There are some reports that say the time was actually logged at 12.21am. The same system logged the door closing at 12.40am.

Between 6.30 and 6.45am on July 30, Billy woke up and found that Katie was not in bed. He searched the property. Billy found her critically injured -unconscious and bleeding – and unclothed from the waist down in the side yard and called 911.

First responders attended the property and Katie was taken to hospital in critical condition.

A dispatch recording reportedly includes a paramedic describing Katie as having been seriously injured and requesting police assistance. Fox4 obtained the dispatch log and a paramedic who responded to the scene described Katie as ‘very beat up.’

Katie had suffered a traumatic brain injury. She was taken to hospital where she underwent emergency surgery and also required additional medical procedures including a tracheostomy and feeding tube..

When Katie arrived at the hospital, she had bloodwork taken. Her blood alcohol level was said to be approximately 0.400. For comparison, the legal blood alcohol limit for drivers in Missouri is 0.08.

A BAC of 0.400% (0.40 g/dL) is an extremely dangerous, potentially fatal level of alcohol intoxication. It is around five times the 0.08% driving limit used in the U.S.

At around 0.30–0.40%, medical references describe effects including:

Severe confusion and disorientation

Extreme drowsiness/stupor

Very poor or absent response to external stimuli

Loss of the ability to walk or sit upright

Loss of consciousness

Memory loss/blackouts

Vomiting

Suppressed gag reflex, creating a risk of choking on vomit

Hypothermia

Very slow or irregular breathing

Coma

Respiratory failure/arrest and death at or above approximately 0.40%

The Royal Children’s Hospital clinical guideline specifically lists 0.40% as associated with respiratory depression, while Cleveland Clinic describes 0.30–0.40% as likely alcohol poisoning with loss of consciousness and levels above 0.40% as potentially fatal.

An Australian clinical resource similarly describes 0.30–0.40 as a state of anaesthesia/sleepiness with poor response to stimuli, and above 0.40 as potentially causing respiratory failure, coma and death.

There are many unanswered questions as to how Katie obtained this BAC. Had she been drinking before arriving home? Did she drink when she got home?

Another question that was raised was about Katie being undressed from the waist down. Had she been sexually assaulted? As Katie never regained consciousness, a sexual assault forensic examination was not able to be conducted as she could not give consent.

According to reporting about the case, investigators would have needed appropriate legal authorization to conduct such an examination.

There are conflicting accounts about what happened next.

Katie’s friends and family have said they were told police attempted to obtain a warrant or other authorization.

The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office has disputed that account.

Prosecutor Melesa Johnson said her office could not submit a warrant for approval without information from police indicating that a crime had occurred. No sexual assault examination was undertaken.

On August 12, Billy filed a petition seeking to be appointed Katie’s guardian and conservator. Katie was unconscious and able to manage her own affairs.

That decision also raised questions for civil attorney David Smith.

“It concerns me that while she’s fighting for her life in the ICU, her spouse is out trying to get guardianship and conservatorship,” Smith said. “Normally in a hospital setting, the doctor will defer and talk with the spouse, but to take the time and go out and file legal proceedings for these two things — that’s just strange.”

Katie passed away on Saturday August 29, one month after she was found in her yard.

Billy released this statement:

Upon her death, the investigation changed from a person found critically injured, into a death investigation.

Kansas City police have said the investigation remains open. Police have also said there were no immediate signs of foul play at the scene, despite the paramedic saying Katie was beat up?

First, who opened the back door shortly after midnight?

Second, why was the door opened and why did Katie subsequently end up outside?

Third, what happened during the hours between the door opening and Katie being discovered at approximately 6:30 a.m.?

Fourth, what caused Katie’s traumatic brain injury?

Fifth, why was she found without pants or underwear?

Sixth, what role did alcohol play in the events of that night?

And finally, what does the medical examiner determine was the cause and manner of Katie’s death?

Katie’s friends and family have spoken out –

“I feel like I was her big sister, I have to protect her. I have to figure out what happened to her,” said Jennifer Trimble, Katie’s sister.

“Somebody dropped the ball.”

Her childhood friend Nicole Bandera said “I wake up in the middle of the night, I slept for an hour, and I have a new question. “Why did she go outside at 12:11 a.m. alone without her dogs? Why were her dogs in a kennel? Why was she found without her pants on? How did she get the bruising and injuries on her body?”

“That job is to turn this city inside out until we know the answer to every single question — until I can look her mother in her eyes and say this is what happened,” Nicole said.
